King’s Park retain KWIK Cricket Cup

Five local primary schools battled it out to qualify for the Northern Ireland KWIK Cricket Finals at Stormont in an exciting tournament at Pollock Park last week. Lurgan Model, Dickson, St. Marys, Carrick and King’s Park enjoyed the beautiful weather in a round robin competition over 5 rounds, each team playing four games of 8 overs per side.

All of the schools taking part have been regular visitors to the tournament and have been receiving tuition from Club professional Niranjan Godbole over the past number of weeks along with assistance from coaches from Cricket Ireland. The games were played in a great spirit and there were some keenly contested games.

Lurgan Model ran Carrick, St. Marys and Dickson close in three of the games and can consider themselves unlucky not to win at least one of those matches. The closest game of the day was a one run victory for St. Mary’s over Dickson, but the best performances of the tournament came from the King’s Park team who went through the tournament undefeated and thoroughly deserved to win the competition. Three teams finished on two wins each with the number of runs scored being used being used to calculate that Dickson finished runners up and Carrick just edged out St. Mary’s into third place.

All of the participants received a certificate from Lurgan Rugby Football and Cricket Club President Billy Boyd who then presented gold, silver and bronze medals to the top three teams with King’s Park in addition receiving the Philip Wallace Memorial Trophy.

King’s Park will now represent Lurgan Cricket Club at the Northern Ireland Finals which take place at Stormont on Wednesday 15th June.

Each team also received a short coaching session delivered by NCU Development Officer Callum Atkinson and Lurgan Cricket Club would like to thank Callum for a programme that was greatly appreciated by all the competitors.
