Ladies start with derby win

Lurgan Ladies began their 2017 Women’s Premier League campaign with a 53 run defeat over last year’s champions Waringstown at Pollock Park.

Batting first, it was a 3rd wicket partnership between captain Hannah Grieve (50 retired) and Sarah McCallan (47 not out) that set up a challenging total for the visitors. Nichola Spence provided support at the end of the innings hitting a valuable 22 as the Town side posted 153 for 3 wkts in their 25 overs.

In reply, Waringstown’s innings got off to a solid start with openers Linehan and Murray scoring steadily. However once Lauren Breakey bowled Linehan for 31 and Alex Craig had Murray caught out for 20, Lurgan seized control. It was a superb bowling performance by Lauren Breakey that wreaked havoc to the Waringstown middle order, claiming 4 wickets for just 9 runs in her four overs, three of the wickets coming in a triple wicket maiden second over. Waringstown eventually finished on 104 for 7 wkts after 25 overs. There was a wicket each for Alex Craig and Jane Kilpatrick as the home side capped a fine performance by gaining their first 4 points of the season.
