Section 1 status confirmed

Lurgan’s Section 1 status was confirmed at the weekend despite a 49 run 20/20 defeat at home to Woodvale on Saturday morning. Bangor’s 63 run win over Cliftonville the next day condemned the Belfast side to Section 2 cricket along with Academy.

Groundsman Rodney McShane had worked miracles to try and make sure the game went ahead and with the outfield still very damp, Richard Clarke put the visitors into bat.  Some poor Lurgan catching undoubtably
contributed to the Woodvale total of 117 for 9 wkts in their 20 overs, with top scorer Saeed (33) missed three times. Best bowling performance for Lurgan was 2 for 14 runs in 4 overs by Paul Stafford and there were two wkts each for Andrew Bingham, Peter Maxwell and Derek Wilson and one for Stephen Johnston.

The dismissal of Stephen Johnston and Stephen Chambers by Robinson with the first two balls of the fourth over put the home side’s batting on the back foot at 14 for 2. Wickets continued to fall regularly and the town side were eventually bowled out for 68 in the final over. Ollie McCollum, Peter Maxwell and Andrew Bingham each scored 14. Lurgan’s final match of the season is away to Armagh next Saturday, weather permitting.
